Every year in April and May in a small town south of the DFW area, there's a Renaissance Festival called Scarborough Faire. We've attended a couple times in the past but it had been several years since our last visit and so we figured it was time to go back. Previously the boys were in a stroller and weren't really interested in the novelty. Now, especially with the kids' continued fascination with swords and knights and such, we figured they'd have a great time.
It was a nice cool day (for Texas) and we traveled out Saturday morning (May 19). The theme for this weekend at the Faire was "Long John Silver’s Pirate Invasion," so we were looking forward to seeing lots of pirates as well as knights and other renaissance characters.
Besides having lots of games, activities, and food that costs money, the Faire has a lot of free shows including jugglers, sword fighters, musicians, acrobats, and much more. I attempted to work out a detailed schedule for the day so we could hit all the different shows we were interested in all throughout the day.
We started out at the Jousting show where we cheered and booed for the different riders. Spencer got bored quickly when the first part had them showing their skill lancing rings rather than fighting each other. Eventually they did get around to battling, but I think he enjoyed his giant pretzel more than the show.
After the jousting we went to a show Colin was interested which was described as a "Father and Son who throw knives at each other." What better way to bond?
It was fun, but I think Maria got a bit annoyed at all the over-acting and bad jokes and the kids were getting restless from watching shows. So we threw away my schedule and went to find lunch.
