The weekend of Colin

Some people consider it a bad thing to have a birthday on a Sunday, when you have to go to church and all. We, on the other hand, view it as an opportunity to celebrate all weekend long! (: Colin even helped write a schedule on the whiteboard of how the weekend would go, including what he'd like to eat. (On birthdays around here, you get to be "king for the day!")

We started out Saturday morning with a couple of early presents. Greg and Spencer were dressed alike to "confuse Colin."

Colin loved the bow and arrow set from Spencer.

Then Colin sat down with Greg to go over his new Bear handbook for Cub Scouts - especially the part about knife safety.

He opened more presents, including a Light science experiment kit he'd wanted . . .

. . . and his long-awaited first pocketknife! (Repeat after me: It's not a toy.)

After getting ready for the day, we went to Lone Star Comics in Arlington for a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament. Alas, apparently registration fills up early, so he didn't get in the official tournament, but he was still able to have 3 duels with someone there that was also just watching. (I love that he can comfortably fit right in and isn't afraid to talk to someone older than he is!) Greg stayed on site, and I took Spencer to a nearby pet shop where we oohed and aahed over the cute little hamsters.

After that, it was time for lunch at Wendy's!

When we got home, there was a surprise waiting from his Whitehead grandparents - an art set! Yippee!

Because Colin was king for the day, he got to go play in his room while the rest of us cleaned up for his friends to come over. (He knew he wasn't getting an "official" party, but had asked if just a couple of his friends could come over for a movie and popcorn.)

His friends Robbie and Nicolas - and, of course, Spencer. (:

Chocolate cheesecake! What great taste he has. (:

Watching "Coraline."

After his friends went home and Colin played with his new presents for a bit, it was time for dinner at Genghis Grill! Yum!

This morning, his actual birthday, started out with breakfast on the traditional Birthday Monkey Plate.

He wanted breakfast in bed. I was thrilled about that - I always want to do breakfast in bed for people, but Greg doesn't like it and the kids are usually out of bed before I get up. Colin was awake and waiting in bed ready for breakfast!

Once he was ready for church, he got to open the few remaining presents he had.

Wow, his very own Nintendo DS Lite! Whee! (This was a total cheat. It was actually my DS that he always played more than I did, so we bought a new skin for it and turned it from girly pink into a more gender-appropriate blue Zelda theme.)

Happy 9th birthday, my sweet not-so-little boy!

In the picture where he is smiling in the vest he looks so much like Clark when he was younger!
