During a recent trip to Home Depot, the boys noticed a coloring contest that the store was holding. Maria brought home a page for both of them to color and they began plotting what they could do to win the top prizes.
Colin decided he would elaborate on the original picture by adding a background and other details. Spencer decided he would spend extra time coloring very carefully and thoroughly. After getting on mom's case, Maria eventually returned to Home Depot to enter their pictures into the contest.
This afternoon Maria received a call from Home Depot telling her that Colin had won first place! He was extremely excited and Spencer was being a good sport and a supportive brother by congratulating him. Not more than a minute later, the phone rang again and there was the same person from Home Depot calling to inform us that Spencer had won third place! So we immediately ran over to the store (thanks to home schooling and lunch break at work) to pick up their prizes.
Colin won a $50 prize pack, and Spencer won a $15 prize pack. Since it was a safety theme, both packs had a smoke detector and a pretty full emergency kit (first aid items, emergency blanket, MREs, matches and candles, and a few other things). In addition, Colin got a double flash light kit, a fire extinguisher, an emergency blanket/sleeping back, and a Home Depot water bottle (and probably one or two more items that escape me at the moment.)
Here's a couple more pictures of the boys with their award-winning artwork (Colin's is sideways so you can read the "1st Winner" award) and their prize bags.
